Jira Tool

Jira Tutorial

An Australian company called Atlassian developed a tool for bug tracking, issue tracking and project management called Jira. The word Jira is derived from the Japanese word “Gojira”. The meaning of the word Gojira is Godzilla. The issues and bugs related to software and mobile applications can be tracked using this tool. This tool can also be used for the management of the project. The issues can be handled easily by the useful functions and features present in the Jira dashboard. Everything is configured inside the Jira scheme and it consists of workflows, issue types, custom fields, screen, a configuration of the field, notifications, etc.

Necessity to learn Jira

  • In any given team environment, a tool is useful if it is easy to use and flexible in a location that is centralized for everything that needs someone to do it at some point. Jira tool captures all the work requests, tasks, bugs, etc. at the most basic level.
  • Jira tool not only allows us to view a person’s work but also allows team visibility to enable everyone in the team to view each other’s work resulting in collaboration and accountability within a team.
  • JIRA workflows create momentum when work is entered because they can be used out of the box or customizable in a way required for working. Notifications are sent out to relevant people as the task is created, assessed, work upon and tested thus making the system a passive one.
  • JIRA and tools like it provide visibility, promote ownership, can improve efficiency and increase collaboration when used properly.

Applications of Jira

The applications of Jira are:

Tracking of issues and management: Jira provides features to define workflow, management of daily tasks, tracking the progress of the work done by the team.

Configurable dashboard with widgets: It allows us to track what is going on in a project, can track user workflows, burndown charts, verify the velocity of a team, etc.

Reporting: The progress of the project can be understood by the best reports provided by Jira. It helps us to understand the budget by giving total spent versus estimation.

Scrum and Kanban: Configurable scrum and Kanban boards are provided by Jira. Scrum board can be used to manage the board. Kanban can be used to manage bugs, epics in the system.

Plugins Support: A ton of external plugins is provided by Jira to manage everything regarding the product inside Jira.

Example

Test_Project/XYZ #abc The key uniquely identifies the issue.

An example issue in so and so part of the app #abc

#Assignee: Amit

The assignee is the person currently working on the issue.

#Status: In Progress

The status indicates where the issue currently is in its workflow.
